My chosen songs

I chose these songs because because these songs have the most contrast between all my potential. I tried to stay away from the Yoruba songs (imela & igwe) because i feel that the repetition in the songs would become to boring for the audience. I also chose these songs because most of my potential songs are of the RnB genre, which doesn't give much contrast. This goes against the brief. I also chose these songs in this order because they all link in some sort of way going from the first to last e.g 1. lost love - 2. losing love - 3. love yourself - 4. other people do care - 5. I don't have any worries - 6. God has my back. I feel this would keep the audience more engaged because they wont be focusing on the extremity of change in the message of the song but they will focus on the songs themselves, I say this because when i listen to an album (as a young person), when there are 2 different message extremities i start to focus on those rather than focus on enjoying the album.

Practice regime

warm ups for:

Breath

  • Ssss control - breath in for four beats, hold for four beats and let out the breath in a sss sound for 8 - 16 beats progressively going up - This helps breath control when singing - It really helped me as a singer because it showed me how i was progressing in my breath control.
  • Jack's house - say these lines in one breath: This is the house that Jack built (Breath) This is the malt that lay in the house that Jack built (Breath) This is the mouse that ate the malt that lay in the house that Jack built (Breath) This is the cat that killed the mouse that ate the malt that lay in the house that Jack built (Breath) this is the dog that worried the cat that killed the mouse that ate the malt that lay in the house that Jack built (Breath) this is the cow with the crooked horn that tossed the dog that worried the cat that killed the mouse that ate the malt that lay in the house that Jack built (Breath). - This helps breath control with long notes / phrases in a song - This warm up helped me gain confidence to hold my longer notes

Diction

  • Tongue twisters - For example 'Betty brought some butter but the butter Betty brought was bitter so Betty brought some better butter than the butter Betty brought before.' - This helps us get used to using the muscles in our faces to enunciate words correctly - This warm up helped me know how to enunciate while i sing because some of my words were getting lost in my singing.
  • Face message- first off message your cheeks with your finger tips then begin to add a lip roll - this helps to relax the muscles in your face before performing - this helped me to lessen the tension in my muscles when i perform in front of people, this is because when I perform to people my muscles tense up.

Range

  • Down the road - singing 'down the road I go' from the middle of your range to the bottom then sing 'up the road I go' from the middle of your range - this allows us to see how large our range really is - this helped me practise my range and also see if i can increase my range.
  • pitch change - practise a song (in your repertoire) with pitch changes e.g. Human by Rag n bone man - this allowed us to really work on our ranges - this exercise allowed me to see which songs worked in my range and which didn't, it also allowed me to practise my songs a little more.

Extras

  • bad mommy - 'Mummy made me mush my M&Ms' using a half octave scale (ascending and descending).
  • warm it up - 'Every time I get the opportunity to warm up my voice I'm going to warm it up, warm it up, every time I get the opportunity to warm up my voice. You're going to hear me sing 'ye-ah' 'ye-ah' 'ye-ah' 'ye-ah' (ascending in your range).
  • chew and show - mmmm (chew)  < change on clap que> wah wah wah (tongue out)
  • FEAST!!! - mime eating as much as you can as wide as you can.

My Practise timetable

  • On Mondays I mainly focus on relaxing my muscles 'intensely' so that through out the week I wouldn't have to do as long relaxation exercises. I also do one or two range Exercises so that I can record my improvement in my range throughout the week. After this I focus on one of my mellow songs (because I  haven't worked on my breathing yet)
  • On Tuesdays I focus on my breath control so that I could focus on practising one of my more staccato songs. I try to record where I get in the above breathing exercises to see if I make proper progression each week
  • Wednesday was my relaxation day because of our singing class during the School day.
  • On Thursdays I focused on my diction  because my songs started off sounding a bit rough because of the way I pronounce/say my words. Then practised one of the mellow songs from my potentials.
  • On Fridays I did breath, diction and range exercises so that i could prepare myself to practise most of my potentials so I could build a final set. i also worked on my posture and stage presence while working on these songs.
I found this timetable more useful to me because I find it easier to focus on one thing then bring it all together at the end. It also allowed me to cut off some potentials during the week.
